After working closely with our Rosehill Students for an entire year, we have made significant strides in helping them recognize and establish routines that foster a sense of stability and predictability in their daily lives. Routines are essential for our special needs students, especially those who thrive on structure, as they provide a framework that helps them navigate their day with confidence.
One specific morning activity designed for our group of neurodiverse students involves planning out their day in a way that allows them to anticipate what is coming next, thus reducing anxiety and enhancing their overall engagement in the learning process. For instance, this particular student demonstrated a remarkable ability to independently recognize that it was Tuesday. He enthusiastically shared his routine for the day, which included two key highlights: enjoying Morning Tea followed by Dance!
This simple yet effective routine not only gives him a clear understanding of what to expect but also instills a sense of excitement and joy as he looks forward to each component of his day. The anticipation of the dance session, in particular, stands out as one of the highlights of the week. It is during this time that Sonjia, our talented dance instructor, comes in to lead the session. This weekly event has become a cherished experience for the students, as it allows them to express themselves through movement, engage with their peers, and develop their motor skills in a fun and supportive environment.
The combination of structured planning and the joy of dance not only enhances their social skills but also contributes to their emotional well-being. By encouraging students like him to take ownership of their daily schedules, we are fostering independence and self-confidence, which are crucial for their development.
Furthermore, this routine serves as a powerful reminder of the positive impact that consistent activities can have on their overall learning experience, making each day something to look forward to.
